As of July 1st, the Applied Geophysics Group at KIT proudly participates in the DFG-funded collaborative research centre (CRC) 1173, "Wave phenomena: analysis and numerics." This CRC brings together 16 principal investigators from analysis and numerics of the KIT Department of Mathematics. Another four Pis are from optics and photonics, biomedical engineering, and applied geophysics work and work on the interfaces to applications. The Applied Geophysics group contributes to the subproject C2 “Seismic Imaging by full waveform inversion (FWI)”. The main focus of subproject C2 is the development of Newton-type FWI inversion schemes and the FWI strategies to infer seismic wave attenuation.
